Food confusion
It used to be simple to prepare a meal, you paid a visit to the butcher or the fishmonger for some meat or fish, you bought potatoes and other vegetables at the greengrocer and you took them home. You fried a lamb chop or some liver or poached a piece of haddock in some milk, boiled a few potatoes and some form of green vegetable and that was that. To follow you may have had rice pudding (homemade) or even just some bread and jam. Simple, filling and nourishing.How times have changed and not necessarily for the better. Everywhere we turn there are books and magazines about food, wall to wall TV series about cooking and entire TV channels devoted to the subject. A variety of irritating celebrity chefs bombard us with displays of pan frying, flambeing, sugar spinning and‘fusion’ food - the combination of the unspeakable to create the inedible - that is enough to terrify anyone and put them off cooking for life.Then there are all the‘experts’, government bodies and self proclaimed nutritionists chucking in their penny’s worth of conflicting advice. Don’t eat red meat. Detox. Eat organic. Drink more water. Don’t use butter. Eat more fish. Drink less alcohol. Eat seasonally. Eat raw food. Fat will kill you. Support farmers in Africa. Food miles. Supermarkets are good. Supermarkets are the work of the devil (hear hear). Etcetara. Etcetara. Etcetara. Is it really any wonder that so many people in this country no longer know what to buy, what to eat or how to cook?I have to admit that I am more afraid of Tesco than I am of Vladmir Putin and George W. Not just our biggest supermarket chain but the biggest retailer. Tesco takes one pound in every seven spent in shops in this country. That is a phenomenal amount of money. The power of supermarkets in this country to influence what we buy and what we eat is unprecedented and unequalled anywhere else in the world apart from the bad old USA. The rise in the number and size of supermarkets can be directly linked to the decline in the number of independent food retailers in this country. It also goes hand in hand with rising levels of obesity and the de-skilling of at least two generations when it comes to the ability to produce a sensible meal from fresh, raw ingredients at reasonable cost.I was seriously depressed when I heard on The Voice of the Nation(Radio 4) that many children have no idea where their food comes from. One child actually thought that pasta shells came from the sea. For Godsake! What are we doing? Less than thirty per cent of us now buy our food outside of supermarkets. It's a tragedy. Behind the coy marketing slogans such as 'Every Little Helps' lies a cynical beast intent on screwing it's staff, it's producers and suppliers and it's customers and they need to be stopped.
