When in Rome
The Eternal City is not the first place you’d think of going for insights into Bangladesh, but the recent Italian World Cup victory brought back to me a trip we made not long ago, and three small but connected events which have etched themselves on my memory. We were on holiday, falling in love once again with the city: the glowing honey-coloured architecture, the slabs of sunlight slanting through church doorways, the squares and statues sparkling like quartz, the brio and elegance of street-life. And oh, my dears, the food! The coffee!Sitting on a majestic old square one day, indulging in one of those sublime espressos, we suddenly became aware of a presence hovering. We looked up and there was a South Asian man, his arms full of brightly-coloured earrings and pendants. Of course it turned out, when we asked, that he was from Bangladesh. (One, we later found out, of several thousand Bangladeshis who have made the dangerous and arduous journey overland to Italy in search of a better life). These street-hawker jobs constitute an entry-level gateway, an opportunity to pick up some Italian, learn the ropes, before aspiring to a job in a restaurant or in industry. But life is tough, sharing beds within tiny dormitories, scratching out a living, surviving from day to day, grappling with a new language, unscrupulous bosses, and the tacit hostility of the passing crowds. His face registered amazement and then delight when we began to speak Bangla, and we fell into a long conversation. He even called a few friends over from other parts of the square to bear witness to this strange phenomenon. Later, when we headed off, he insisted on giving Jules a pair of earrings, adamantly refusing to take any money.Later that day, next to a famous fountain, where coins lay at the bottom, flashing like diamonds in the water, a second hawker approached through the chattering crowd. Wise to these things by now, we immediately launched into Bangla. Again, a momentary expression of total surprise, followed by a joyful, gap-toothed grin. This one was selling gaudy plastic toys– pocket-sized trolls with wild crayon-pink hair and primary-coloured clothes - guaranteed, it seemed to me, to petrify any child unfortunate enough to receive one. Nevertheless, aesthetics weren’t the point. How much did they cost? ‘Three euros each’ came the answer. So we gave him ten euros, popped two of the grotesque little things into our bag, and told him to keep the change.Immediately, he asked us to follow him, disappeared into a nearby café, and ordered a coffee for each of us, totally unfazed by the prospect of his four euros profit being suddenly reduced to one. And again, no matter how hard we tried to press him, he wouldn’t let us pay.As the day wore on, it turned out that there were Bangladeshis round every corner, and so we ended up, on that holiday, speaking almost as much Bangla as Italian. (Whoever thoughtEnglishwas the international language?).And then, towards evening, we ended up in one of the quiet genteel parks up above the city. Dusky amber light filtering through the trees; the ghostly cries of playful children in the air; the glorious city spread out like a golden blanket at our feet. In the shade, a van selling ice-cream and drinks. We made our way over, and saw, from a distance, that the driver/sales assistant was, (naturally), from Bangladesh. I started off by saying‘Ek botol pani’(‘A bottle of water’) and, for the third time that day, a man’s eyes, initially wary and guarded, suddenly came to life, glowing like precious stones.Of course, you know what happened next. We opened our wallets to pay for the water, but once again met with absolute refusal. And have no doubt, later that day our new acquaintances would have to account (and make up) for the shortfall in their takings, to some vaguely threatening, money-counting boss. The grey market in which they operate is not run as a charity. So when, as occasionally happens here, I hear Bangladeshis talk themselves down, and lament how they are a bad, grasping, mean-spirited nation, I think back to the random kindness of these three strangers, who had nothing to gain from us.These three unsung ambassadors.

BraveSirRobin on Nokia takes on the iPhone
My phone is pretty good, thanks! :-)Fortunately, I don't need to hack one to get all this, but don't get me wrong, I"hack"most of my devices to do interesting things (e.g. my xbox and router). Some examples of what can be done...if I want e.g. a program to log Wifi connections against the bluetooth GPS I have, then I can get a free one. I use a stopwatch/alarm program daily. I can use my phone as a USB keydrive (no drivers required). I can run Skype and MSN/Yahoo/AOL from one program. I can connect over GPRS and share the connection over Wifi. I've got some really fun games on it. Media-wise, I have an iPod clone (mostly a gimic), a better (more featured) mp3 player, as well as other free tools for playing almost any form of video/audio you can throw at it. I can stream internet radio. Other crap currently have installed is a food additive database and star charts (which also links with my GPS). Newer phones have the GPS built in, but mine is two and half years old mind. I also have TomTom sat nav, which is very handy in the car and when walking about.WRT to the office sync stuff, well that's been available for years as well. I sync mine with my work and home PCs, meaning that all three have the same ToDo list, COntact list and calendar. That alone is worth it IMHO, it's very useful as you suggest. If you want, you can also sync over the air with a third-party datastore but that costs money and it's not something I personally need (I have my own backup arrangements). It doesn't sync photos as such, but you could tell it to sync your photo directory to do that.
